Each of our teeth are coated in a thin layer of enamel. Despite being thin, this layer is very strong and protects our teeth from injury, decay, and infection. However, when a tooth is damaged, even a minor chip or crack could mean the enamel is compromised and the sensitive inner layers have been exposed to bacteria. Without treatment, cavities could form or even dental infections. To avoid discomfort and the risk of tooth loss, you should seek treatment right away. Even if your injury happens on weekends or outside of normal business hours, give us a call and we will find a time to see you quickly.
In the immediate aftermath, there are steps you can take to help ease your discomfort and prevent major complications. For example, when you sustain an injury, or develop discomfort or have an object stuck between your teeth start by rinsing with warm water. Next, you can floss between teeth to try and remove an object. If this fails, let us know and don’t use anything other than floss as you could damage the gums.
If you have a toothache, and rinsing and flossing fails to bring relief, then contact us because you may have an infection that needs treatment. If a tooth is damaged, see if you can recover and pieces and bring them with you. After your rinse with water, use cloth or gauze to stem bleeding. A cold compress or ice pack against the side of your face could also reduce swelling. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, and see us right away.
If a tooth is knocked out completely, then pick it up by the root and rinse it under water to remove dirt and debris, but leave any tissues in place. Place it in a glass of salt water or milk, and bring it with you. Again, you can take steps to ease bleeding and prevent facial swelling.
With dental bonding, we can repair minor damage in one visit. Crowns could address more severe damage, and we could use fillings or crowns for decay or infection. If you have questions about emergency dentistry, then contact our team today!
