When you have major tooth loss, our team wants to help you enjoy your favorite meals again and never hesitate to show off your pearly whites. To address total or near-total tooth loss, our team can offer a complete denture. In today’s blog, your Newhall, CA, dentist talks about crafting a custom set of dentures.
When you suffer from advanced tooth loss, you’re missing most if not all of your natural teeth. This means you could be severely limited in the kinds of foods you can eat, and that even speaking clearly could be a problem. In addition, the loss of mass and density in your smile due to tooth loss could mean a prematurely aged appearance. To preserve your youthful features and restore function and beauty to your smile, you may need a complete set of dental implant dentures.
Each one we provide for our patients will be custom-made for a comfortable fit and to ensure preservation of your facial structure and jawbone density. To begin, we will see if you have teeth that need to be extracted. We will gently remove these teeth and then take detailed digital impressions of the smile, which we can use in a lab setting to design and craft the finished product. The denture portion will have a complete row of teeth in an acrylic base. The base will be designed to look like gum tissue, and the teeth will be made from ceramic to ensure they can be shaded to blend with the smile and offer a lifelike appearance.
Now we decide how to support them. With a removable option, they’re held in place with suction or the assistance of special adhesive. While effective, they need to be replaced every 5 to 10 years as the jaw ridge changes shape from the loss of mass and density.
But with a dental implant option, we will insert several posts into the jaw. The body will accept them as natural roots and they will stimulate the growth of bone tissue to keep the jaw strong. Your new roots can then stay in place for decades to come, or even an entire lifetime. Your prosthetic is then attached to them with abutments. Your new smile never slips when you eat or speak, and can restore optimal function and appearance.
