Controlling the Threat of Periodontal Disease

There are many different conditions that could negatively impact your oral health, and periodontal disease is one of the most common (second only to tooth decay). It’s also one of the more destructive dental diseases. When left untreated, it affects your gums and jawbone structure enough to make it the leading cause of adult tooth loss. Fortunately, you can largely prevent periodontal disease by sticking to excellent hygiene practices at home and attending regular exam and cleaning appointments at least twice a year. If you exhibit signs of it during your visit, then we can recommend a personalized periodontal cleaning and maintenance schedule to help you prevent the extensive damage it could cause.

The Dangers of Ignoring It

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is an infection in your gums that results from excessive plaque and tartar buildup underneath your gums. Oral bacteria work their under your gums to settle on the roots of your teeth where your toothbrush and floss can’t reach. As they accumulate into plaque and tartar, the bacteria infect and erode your gums, leading to symptoms such as redness, inflammation, bleeding, gum recession, and more. To address the infection, we can perform periodontal (deep) cleaning to remove the bacteria from your teeth roots and allow your gums to heal. This also reduces the risks of bacteria clinging to your teeth roots in the future, reducing your risks of more severe gum disease.
