Find out how our teeth whitening system can help you enjoy a smile brightened by multiple shades!
Why Do Our Teeth Become Stained?
There are actually two distinct forms of discoloration. The most common is extrinsic, which forms on the surface of our teeth. These may occur due to the foods and drinks we consume, poor oral hygiene, or the use of tobacco products. Intrinsic stains form below the tooth enamel, often the result of injury to the teeth, fluorosis, or tetracycline use at a young age. Before we prescribe cosmetic treatment, we will assess the cause and severity of your teeth stains.
Zoom! Whitening
We begin the treatment with an office visit. After taking impressions of your teeth, we create a custom-made set of plastic trays. We then perform an in-office procedure employing a bleaching gel and special light. The entire in-office portion usually lasts between one and two hours. Once the patient returns home, he or she will fill the trays with gel and wear them for between 30 and 45 minutes a day, over the course of one to two weeks. The trays and gel help break up and remove stains from the surface of your teeth. You will enjoy a smile brightened by multiple shades. We may use treatment to address extrinsic stains and minor intrinsic discoloration. Now, if you have severe intrinsic staining, the kind that may not respond to teeth whitening, then we may instead mask stains with cosmetic dental bonding, porcelain veneers, or a combination of the two options.
Keeping Your Smile Bright
Once your treatment is complete, you will obviously want your new results to last. Taking care of your smile from home helps reduce the severity of stains in the future. For example, when you brush and floss your teeth daily, you reduce plaque buildup. Plaque makes the appearance of stains more visible. You should also cut back on sugary foods and drinks, which promote plaque buildup. Drinks with dark pigments, such as coffee, tea, soda, and red wine, also cause discoloration, so cutting back may be helpful. Finally, be sure you see us every six months for a checkup and cleaning, so we can remove all plaque and help you leave the office with a brighter smile.
