If you have an uneven smile, then you may be curious about the Invisalign® system. We use this option to help many of our Newhall, CA, patients obtain more even (and healthier) smiles. How does Invisalign® work, and when should you see your dentist for treatment? Let’s learn more about our clear aligner system in today’s blog.
Facts About the Invisalign® System
- They Blend With Your Smile: The braces themselves will be created from a clear acrylic material, which means they will be nearly invisible when worn. Unlike metal orthodontics or retainers, few people will realize you’re wearing braces at all! This makes the system very popular with teens or adults worried about their professional appearance.
- The Aligners Fit Comfortably: Each set is custom-made specifically for your smile, which means when worn they fit comfortably. People avoid the gum and cheek irritation that is often experienced with metal orthodontics. In addition, there is no need for periodic adjustments, as you simply move on to the next set of clear braces about once every two weeks.
- Treatment Takes About a Year: For adults, treatment usually takes about a year to complete. Teens, who’s mouths are still growing and developing, may take up to 18 months to see optimal results. Either way, this is much shorter than the two or more years required for metal orthodontics to correct smiles. To see optimal results in the original timeframe discussed with your dentist, you need to wear each set for about 20 to 22 hours every day.
- You can Remove The Aligners Before Meals: Did you know that the braces are actually removable? Which means you don’t need to worry about certain foods damaging or becoming stuck in your orthodontics, you simply take out your Invisalign® aligners prior to each meal. In addition, you can do the same before you brush and floss your teeth, which makes caring for your smile easier and reduces the risk of tooth decay, teeth stains, and gum disease during treatment. As long as you wear them for the amount of time the dentist recommends each day, you can also remove them before special occasions, such as a date, graduation, or job interview.
