We all strive to enjoy a brighter smile, but over time a myriad of factors could cause unsightly discoloration to develop. Fortunately, we have two very different, but effective, methods of removing these stains. In today’s blog, your Newhall, CA, dentist will look at our in-office and at-home teeth whitening treatments.
The Causes of Our Teeth Stains
How do stains form on our smiles? The most common form develops on the surfaces of our smiles and is referred to as extrinsic. They could be caused by plaque buildup, drinks with dark pigments or tannins, poor oral hygiene, and smoking or tobacco use. We also have discoloration that develops underneath the outer enamel. Known as intrinsic, this could be caused by fluorosis, injury to the face or jaw, or as a result of tetracycline exposure in childhood. Before we recommend treatment, we will make a detailed exam to see which one is right for your smile!
In-Office Treatment
The in-office option is a great way to address extrinsic discoloration. The treatment takes only one visit, providing optimal results in as little as two hours. We start by placing a protective layer on the gums and lips, and then applying a bleaching gel to the teeth. We use a special light to activate the gel and break up discoloration. You then leave with a significantly brighter smile. For many, this is a great option if you need quick results before a special occasion.
Removing Stains from Home
Our home-based option can address more severe extrinsic stains, and also address minor intrinsic stains too. We start by taking detailed impressions of the smile, as well as images and measurements. Next, we use this information to create a custom-made set of trays that fit over the teeth. We send you home with these trays, along with a powerful bleaching gel. At home, you will wear the gel-filled trays for about a half hour to 45 minutes, depending on the dentist’s recommendations. After about a week to ten days, you could notice optimal results. For some, teeth could be brightened by up to eight different shades. You then keep the trays and leftover gel should you need touch-ups months down the road! You can also keep your smile bright with daily care, such as brushing and flossing, and routine visits for six-month cleanings. You also benefit from drinking more water, and consuming fewer sugary foods and drinks. If you have any questions, then contact our team today!
