If you have stains on your teeth, you may be tempted to try over-the-counter options to remove this discoloration. However, brighter smiles are possible if you instead undergo professional treatment from your Newhall, CA, dentist. In today’s blog, we’re looking at our in-office and at-home options to remove teeth stains!

The Causes of Discoloration

How do unsightly teeth stains form on our smiles? The causes vary, but could include the foods and drinks we consume. Food high in sugar and starch promote plaque buildup, which makes stains more visible (and increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease). Drinks with dark tannins and pigments, such as coffee, red wine, tea, and soda, could also lead to discoloration. Smoking cigarettes and using other tobacco products is a factor too. Poor brushing and flossing habits, combined with infrequent dental cleanings, could then make smiles more likely to develop plaque and tartar buildup.

Whitening In-Office and At-Home

We have two different options to help you. For fast results, you could try our in-office selection, which takes between one and two hours to brighten smiles by several shades. We apply a powerful bleaching gel to the teeth and then activate it with a special LED light. We repair the process until your teeth are brighter.

With our at-home option, you stop by the office just long enough for us to create a custom set of plastic trays. We send these trays home with you, along with a powerful bleaching solution. At home, you will fill the trays with gel and wear them for about 30 to 45 minutes each day for 7 to 10 days. For some, teeth will be brightened by several shades. You then keep the grays and any remaining gel if you need touch-ups down the road. The trays help ensure even results and prevents the gel from becoming diluted!

Treatment to Keep Teeth Bright

To help your teeth stay bright for longer, be sure you brush twice a day for two minutes, and also floss every evening. Avoid tobacco products, and see us for a checkup and cleaning every six months. Try to avoid drinks with dark pigments and sugar, and enjoy healthier snacks light on sugar and starch. These actions will help your teeth stay bright! If you have any questions about how we tackle stained teeth or improve other esthetic issues, then please give us a call today. We want to help you enjoy a beautiful smile!
