Schedule Your Child’s First 2022 Visit

Newhall children's dentistry

Just like you, children need to see the dentist once every six months for a checkup and cleaning. Which is why starting the year with a visit is a great way to ensure your kids improve their smiles in 2022. In today’s blog, your Newhall, CA, dentist talks about our approach to children’s dentistry.

Kids Need Checkups and Cleanings

If possible, schedule your child’s first visit of the year now. That way we can start 2022 with a checkup and cleaning! For kids, a checkup means a chance to take a close look at the smile to assess the state of their oral health. We can then uncover any areas of concern in the early stages and offer care before their smile is compromised. During the same appointment, our team will also clean the teeth. A dental cleaning means we gently remove all plaque and tartar from the teeth, lowering the risk of cavities and gingivitis, as well as bad breath and teeth stains. Kids should have these visits every six months starting at around age two.

Fluoride and Dental Sealants

During the checkup and cleaning visit, our team could also apply a fluoride varnish to the teeth. Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that strengthens the outer layer of tooth enamel. Stronger enamel means a reduced risk of cavities and aching teeth. We could also place a dental sealant as well. This involves applying an acrylic layer to the molars, which sit at the back of the mouth and are often difficult for children to reach when they brush and floss. As a result, cavities tend to form in this part of the smile. Fortunately, the sealants prevent food from becoming trapped between these teeth. The sealants will stay in place anywhere between five and ten years on average.

Fillings

What if your child has a cavity? To offer relief and prevent discomfort, we can treat the decay in one visit with a filling. Instead of metal, we use a composite resin that is safe for kids of all ages. This material blends glass and acrylic-like particles for a filling we can color-match to blend with the tooth. If you have any questions about our preventive treatments and exams, or about our custom restoration options, then contact our team today to learn more. We would love to make 2022 the year your child enjoys optimal oral health, and gains a better understanding of his or her smile.
